Expectant women

The intake of a sufficient volume of appropriate liquids aids metabolism and the good functioning of the kidneys, and thereby also the elimination of any toxic substances that accumulate in the body. A lack of water causes headaches, fatigue, torpidity, and a decline in mental and physical performance. Constipation is also related to poor drinking habits.

How much to drink…

The need for liquids is very individual. An expectant woman should drink at least 1.5 litres of liquids daily, and better yet 2 litres, but much depends on the composition of her diet. We also drink different amounts depending on the time of year – more in summer than in winter. Drinking must be distributed throughout the day, such that the body would be continuously supplied with fluids and in sufficient amounts. By taking in liquids regularly, a woman can prevent the feeling of thirst that is the initial sign of dehydration. But also keep in mind that an excess of liquids puts a strain on the kidneys, which must eliminate the excess liquids.

…and what to drink?

Although pure water is the healthiest drink, an expectant woman does not need to be afraid to drink a more diverse range of beverages. In general, it can be said that fresh water from the tap is of a very high quality in this country, but it is true that in some places or at certain times its taste is not always excellent.
Also packaged baby and spring water is suitable. This water should be kept in a cool place, and once open, a bottle should be used up as soon as possible. Other suitable drinks include fresh fruit and vegetable juices diluted with water, 100% juices diluted with water, unsweetened and not very strong teas, with rooibos and fruit teas being especially suitable. It is good to limit the drinking of black and green tea in pregnancy.

…and what not to drink?

Coffee drinking should also be limited in pregnancy. Coffee has not been proven to have an adverse impact on the development of the foetus, but the caffeine content may increase the heart rate of the foetus and the mother. Other drinks that an expectant woman should not drink include sweet pop, coca-cola-type beverages and beverages containing quinine (for example tonic), energy drinks, nectars, and similar. Those drinks are essentially solutions of sugar, citric acid, artificial flavours, and colorants. Sometimes, many other substances are added, such as phosphates and sulphur dioxide. All of those additives are a great burden on an expectant woman’s organism.

NO to alcohol

Increased alcohol consumption can harm the egg and the sperm prior to conception and in the early stages of pregnancy has proven to have adverse effects on the developing foetus. If an expectant woman consumes alcohol in greater volumes and regularly, the risk of miscarriage, premature birth, or certain complications connected to childbirth threaten. The complications in children include low birth weight, behavioural disorders, and learning problems.

Herbs help

Certain herbs can be safely used even during pregnancy, especially if you have some medical problems. Always follow your physician’s recommendations. The most frequent and most unpleasant problem connected with the first three months of pregnancy is morning sickness. An herb suitable for alleviating morning sickness is camomile flowers, which also has calming properties. You can use the herb in the form of a tea or a relaxing bath.

Delicious lemon balm tea is recommended for expectant women. It is used for relaxing and calming the nervous system and is excellent for headaches, depression, and sleeplessness. It also aids in digestion, fights flatulence, helps with haemorrhoids, and regulates blood pressure. Rosehip tea is a rich source of vitamin C, which is important in terms of anaemia, varicose veins, and enhancing the organism’s immunity.
